Children Are Not Colorblind: Teaching and Learning about Race and Racism
28 October 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
This is a virtual event. To register, please go to bit.ly/nwfl1.
There is a myth in popular culture that young children are born “colorblind” or do not notice race. By this logic, children are “blank slates” who cannot develop racial prejudices until they are explicitly taught to do so. However, current research clearly shows that children not only recognize race from a noticeably early age, but also develop racial biases by ages three to five that do not necessarily resemble the racial attitudes of adults in their lives. This workshop will explore the critical need to begin conversations about race and racism with children right from the start. As stated by Ibram X. Kendi (2020) “Just as we teach our kids to be kind even before they fully understand what it means to be kind, we should teach our kids to be antiracist even before the fully understand what it means to be antiracist.” *

This workshop will be led by Nany Jenner Gabriel, Professor Emerita of Early Childhood Education at Onondaga Community College and the Founder and Director of West Side Nursery School in Camillus.
