Kid's Book Club - Starting April 2024

| By | 3 min read

Does your kiddo always have their nose in a book? Or perhaps they are struggling to find books that interest them and just need some inspiration to discover a new favorite book or author alongside a group of other kids?

Enthusiastic bookworms and reluctant readers alike are invited to join us for a new Kids Book Club program, launching in April!

FAQ’s

Explore our question and answer guide below to learn all about this new program.

Who can join the New Woodstock Free Library’s Kids Book Club?

The book club is ideal for independent readers ages 8 to 12. This is the age range we will use to select the books, using publishers’ recommended reading levels. The book club may still be a good fit for children who are slightly older or slightly younger than the recommended age range, depending on the child’s interests and their reading fluency.

Is registration required?

Yes – Registration opens Thursday, February 1st. Please call the library at 315-662-3134 to register. Early registration is encouraged as space is limited.

When will the book club meet?

We will meet every Friday afternoon in April from 3:30 to 4:30 P.M. at the library.

Do participants need to attend every meeting?

Attendance at every meeting is encouraged but not required. At the first meeting, participants will receive a reading schedule for the month that will list the chapters we will focus on at each meeting, along with reflection questions to think about while reading. If a participant needs to miss a meeting, they can simply read ahead so they are caught up on chapters for the next meeting they are able to attend.

Do I need to purchase a copy of the book club book?

No – Participants will be able to check out a copy of the book through the Mid York library system. If your child needs an audiobook version, please let us know when you call to register and we will make every effort to secure an audiobook version for them.

What will the book club read first?

Our book for March is Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. The book is narrated by…a tree! This is a charming tale of a community connected by a tree named Red who is 216 years old, yet facing the threat of being cut down. If this happens, the tree will certainly lose its life, and as it turns out, the neighborhood of humans and animals living near the tree stand to lose a great deal as well. Read along with us to discover what unfolds! This is the sort of story that can make you laugh, cry, smile, and everything in between!

What happens at each book club meeting?

We will begin each meeting with a little time to say hello to one another and enjoy a light snack together. Then, we will dive into a discussion of the chapters we read for that week. Next, we will either play a game, make a craft, or go on a mini-adventure in the library. We will wrap up by reading the next chapter of the book aloud together before saying goodbye for now!

Who runs the book club?

The kids book club is led by our Children’s Program Coordinator, Chloe Hull. Chloe has experience leading reading groups for children as she previously worked as an elementary school teacher.

Will the kids book club happen every month?

If there is sufficient interest, we will happily run the book club every month moving forward!

I have more questions! Who can I ask?

You are welcome to email our Children’s Program Coordinator, Chloe Hull, directly at NWchildrens@midyork.org. You are also welcome to call the library with questions: 315-662-3134
